Active Matter Steam Account Link - Gaijin Email Binding Fix

Cannot add Active Matter to your Steam library or claim your Steam edition? The Gaijin email-binding rule explains it, plus the fix and the progress-loss trap.

Active Matter Steam Account Link - Gaijin Email Binding Fix

Active Matter will not appear in your Steam library until an email address is attached to your Gaijin account. The official claim page cannot link an account that has no email, and most players who signed up by logging in through Steam have exactly that. The fix takes about ten minutes: install any free Gaijin game on the same Steam account, bind an unused email from its settings, then claim the Steam edition before the deadline on November 23, 2026.

  • The claim deadline is November 23, 2026 — 90 days from the announcement published on August 25, 2026.
  • If your Gaijin account is already tied to a Steam account through another Gaijin game, you must use that same Steam account or your progress does not transfer.
  • After linking, launcher access stays open, but edition upgrades happen on Steam only.
  • The email you bind has to be one that has never been used in any Gaijin project. An address already registered elsewhere will be rejected.

Why Active Matter refuses to appear in your Steam library

The failure is not a store glitch and it is not a bug in your Steam client. The Steam edition claim runs through a Gaijin web page, and that page needs a verified email on the account before it will link anything to Steam. A Gaijin account created by logging in with Steam — which is what happens if you played the demo or bought with a Steam account and never registered an email — carries no email at all.

Gaijin's own community manager explained exactly this on the game's Steam discussion board in late August 2026, and marked the reply as the answer to the thread:

Hi, assuming you played the Steam demo (or just are using a Steam account to log in), and bought an edition on the Gaijin Store already with that account, then it likely won't have an email linked to the account. We need an email linked to the account in order to link to Steam in the process on the website. This is a known issue, and our team are working on an easier solution as we speak.

Two symptoms come out of the same root cause, and they look different depending on where you are standing.

What you see What it actually means
Claim page refuses to proceed, or returns to the start No email on the Gaijin account
E-mail binding option is missing from the settings menu An email is already attached — see the wording below
Game not in your Steam library yet Expected before September 15, or the link was never completed
Linked, but progress looks empty Wrong Steam account used during linking

The second row is worth pausing on. Gaijin's help article states that if the binding button is simply not there, then "the email has already been attached to the account previously." A missing button is not a broken menu. It means the step you are about to do has already been done.

An absent E-mail binding entry is good news in disguise — it means the account already has an address on file. Check your inbox and the Steam promotions folder before assuming the worst.

Work out which case you are actually in

Not everyone hitting this problem bought a second copy. Sort yourself into one of these four before changing anything.

Case A — you bought on Steam, and never bought on the Gaijin Store. There is no early version purchase to convert, so the claim page is the wrong door. Players who bought on Steam report that the game simply appears in their library once the release date arrives, and that Gaijin sends a confirmation email that often lands in the spam or promotions folder. Check both before chasing anything.

Case B — you bought the Early Version on the Gaijin Store. This is the case the claim page is built for. You need an email on the account first, then you claim the free Steam copy. This is the case the rest of this page handles.

Case C — you have an email bound but the claim still fails. Confirm which email is on the account, confirm the Steam account you are signed into on the claim page is the one you actually play on, and read the progress-loss trap below before you try again. Re-running the claim with a different Steam account is the mistake that costs people their save.

Case D — you play several Gaijin games. You may genuinely have more than one Gaijin ID on one Steam account. That is normal, per the same community manager: separate accounts for War Thunder, Enlisted and Crossout are expected behaviour, not corruption. The complication is that the email has to be attached to the specific Gaijin account you want Active Matter linked to.

The fix: bind an unused email from another Gaijin game

This is the workaround Gaijin published as the current solution. It is a bit absurd on its face — downloading a different game to fix this one — but it works because the free Gaijin titles expose an email attachment option that Active Matter's own menu does not, until the account has an address.

Step 1. Install a free Gaijin game on the same Steam account. War Thunder and Enlisted are the two the community manager named. Use the exact same Steam account that you play Active Matter on. A second Steam account is the single most common way people break this.

Step 2. Launch it and log in through Steam. Do not create a fresh registration. You need the login path that lands on the same Gaijin ID Active Matter uses.

Step 3. Open settings and attach an email. The option is labelled E-mail binding in Active Matter's help documentation and attach email in the developer's wording on Steam. Either way it sits in the game settings, and it requires the Steam Overlay to be switched on and working for the pop-up to open.

Step 4. Use an address that has never touched Gaijin. This is the rule that catches people out twice. Gaijin is explicit: the address cannot already be used as a registration or additional email on an account in any other Gaijin project. A fresh address is required, not a spare one you already use for Enlisted.

Step 5. Confirm the mail. The binding flow sends a message to that inbox containing a link, and the link is what actually sets your account password. If nothing arrives, check spam and promotions before starting over — the mail does land, just not where people look first.

Step 6. Claim the Steam edition. Sign in to the dedicated claim page with the Gaijin account you used to purchase Active Matter, and link the Steam account you have been playing on.

Once the email is attached you can sign in through Steam and reach the binding flow again from inside Active Matter itself, at the bottom of the profile window you open by clicking your in-game nickname.

The rule that bites: one address, one Gaijin account

The email is not just a contact detail. It is the key that unlocks support requests and Gaijin store purchases, which is precisely why the binding is refused when the address is already spoken for. Gaijin does not merge accounts or move addresses between them.

That has a consequence worth stating plainly. If you attach a brand new address while you already own a Gaijin ID from an older game, you now have two IDs, and the one with the email is the one that can do support and store work. If the account you attach it to is not the one holding your Active Matter purchase, you have solved the wrong account. Bind the email on the Gaijin account you actually play Active Matter with, even if that means logging into a different game first and confirming the nickname matches.

The progress-loss trap

This is the part that turns a five-minute inconvenience into a support ticket, and it is entirely avoidable.

The official claim announcement states that if the Gaijin account you used to play the launcher version is already linked to a Steam account through one of Gaijin's other games, you must use that same Steam account. If you use a different one, your progress will not be transferred. No warning dialog, no partial merge — the save simply stays behind.

Before you click link, check which Steam accounts are already attached to your Gaijin account. Linking through the wrong Steam account does not error out loudly — it just leaves your progress where it was. Verify first, click second.

Two more transfer rules from the same announcement are worth internalising before you start.

First, linking moves launcher progress onto Steam and overwrites whatever demo progress you had on the Steam version. If you played the demo and care about those hours, they go. There is no merge that keeps both sets.

Second, you keep launcher access. Progress is shared between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC, but only on PC — the official FAQ is blunt that progress cannot be transferred between PC and console versions, and that shared progress exists solely between the Steam and Gaijin.Net builds.

What you actually get after linking

The Steam edition mirrors the Gaijin Store edition you bought, with two adjustments that catch people out.

You bought You get on Steam
Early Version on the Gaijin Store Free Steam access to the matching edition
Premium Edition The Deluxe Edition — Premium was replaced and upgraded
Elite Squad Edition Same bonuses for yourself, no additional keys
Someone used your Elite Squad key Standard Edition on their account

Elite Squad buyers keep every bonus for their own account but the two Standard keys do not come across. The friends who already redeemed those keys receive the Standard Edition on their own accounts. If you are still working out which bundle you actually own, the editions and price breakdown spells out what each one contains.

After the link, one asymmetry catches people: edition upgrades are only possible through the Steam Store. Upgrades that were available on the Gaijin Store before linking are not available there afterwards.

If the claim page still refuses you

Work through these in order, and stop as soon as one resolves it.

  1. Confirm the email really is attached, by opening the binding option again. A missing button means it is attached.
  2. Confirm the Steam Overlay is enabled. The binding pop-up silently fails to open without it.
  3. Confirm you are signing in to the claim page with the purchasing Gaijin account, not a spare one.
  4. Confirm you are linking the Steam account you play on, not a fresh or secondary account.
  5. Check spam and promotions folders for the confirmation mail.
  6. Keep the client current. Patch notes and the version history are tracked on the patch notes page, and the launcher is the same one used by every other Gaijin game.
  7. File it. The account-linking problem is a known issue the developer is already working on, so a report with your account details attached to the thread tends to get picked up. The community tracker and the official channels are listed on the Active Matter community page.

If the game links successfully and then refuses to start, that is a different problem with its own ladder — the not launching and crash fixes page covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions

I never made a Gaijin account. How do I have one? Logging into Active Matter with Steam creates a Gaijin ID automatically, with no email on it. That is the whole problem. Plenty of players only discovered their ID existed when the claim page asked them for an address.

The E-mail binding button is not there at all. Is my game broken? No. Gaijin's help article says a missing binding button means the email has already been attached to the account previously. Check your inbox and Steam promotions folder for a confirmation message, then go straight to the claim page.

Can I use an email I already registered on War Thunder? No. The address cannot already be used as a registration or additional email on an account in any other Gaijin project. You need a completely unused address.

I linked with the wrong Steam account. Can the progress be moved? The official announcement says progress will not be transferred when you use a Steam account other than the one already linked to your Gaijin account. Open a support request with the details rather than attempting a second link, and describe the situation plainly.

Do I lose the launcher version? No. Launcher access is retained after linking, and progress is shared between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC. Console versions are a separate story — progress cannot be moved between PC and console.

What happens to my Steam demo progress? It is replaced by the progress from your launcher version. The announcement is explicit that the launcher progress overwrites the demo save.

The deadline is November 23, 2026 — do I have to link before the game launches? No, you can play through the launcher in the meantime. The deadline applies to claiming the free Steam access, and the Steam version became playable on September 15, 2026, the launch date.

Why does the binding pop-up not open? The Steam Overlay has to be enabled and working, according to Gaijin's support article. That single toggle explains most of the silent failures people report.
