Active Matter Loadout Guide: Weapons, Armour and the Replicator

A loadout in Active Matter is not a list of good guns. It is a volume budget, an ammunition budget and a risk decision, and the game now checks two of them for you before you deploy. Since the 250 Shades of Liberty update the raid screen warns you if you do not have enough ammunition equipped for the raid you selected.

Most first-week mistakes are budget mistakes: too much armour for the value you are carrying, a full backpack before the raid has started, or an ammunition count that assumes you will never miss.

What the Standard Edition actually gives you

This is the official starter kit, straight from the store page. Every number below is published, not inferred:

Category Contents
Weapons 3x SOK-94 Vepr Carbine, 3x MB590 shotgun, 10x MP5 SMG, 10x M9 pistol, 10x Combat knife
Modifications 3x Scope PSO AK 4.0x
Carrying 10x Small safe container, 10x Small Backpack, 10x Small Pouch, 5x Small Magazine Pouches
Protection 10x Tactical PASGT Helmet, 5x Steel armor plate (L), 50x Steel armor plate (S)
Utility 5x Beacon (respawn), 10x Flashlight, 10x First aid kit
Ammunition 15x AKM magazine, 60x MP5 magazine, 20x M9 magazine, 360x 7.62x39mm ammo box, 240x 12 Gauge ammo box, 900x 9x19mm ammo box

Read that ammunition column carefully, because it teaches the weapon roles for you. There is no 5.56mm ammunition in the Standard Edition at all, which rules out the M4A1 — an Assault Rifle you will see recommended everywhere — until you buy up or find one. Your starting ammunition is 7.62x39mm, 12 Gauge and 9x19mm, which maps to the Vepr, the MB590 and the MP5.

The Advanced Edition adds the M4A1, UMP45 and SV-98 plus 600x 5.56mm ammo box and 360x 7.62x51mm. Deluxe adds PKM, M110A1, SCAR-L, SPAS-12 and more.

The volume system, and why it changed under you

Inventory in Active Matter is volume-based, and the split is deliberate. The developers have stated that they plan to continue developing pouches as specialized inventory, distinct from the backpack. The backpack remains a general-purpose inventory for any items.

So a pouch is not a small backpack. A Small Magazine Pouches holds magazines. A Small Pouch holds a category of small items. The backpack holds anything. Understanding that is the difference between a loadout that feels roomy and one that feels full at half capacity.

Then the ground shifted. The 250 Shades of Liberty update changed the volume of many items and storage capacities, and the developers explained the reasoning as bringing relative volumes closer to more realistic values. If a guide you read before that update gave you specific volume numbers, those numbers are stale.

Fill the backpack about 80 percent before you commit to a fight

Leave room for what you will actually loot. A completely full backpack means the next interesting container costs you something you were carrying, which is how a good run turns into a bad one. The extraction loop guide covers what happens when a raid goes wrong.

Armour: plate types, sizes, and the trap that is not a trap

The Fire Walk update on 18 December 2025 reworked armour with new plate types and sizes. Titan plates are the most durable and the most expensive, though they initially absorb slightly less damage than ceramic plates. You choose based on your objective and your confidence in the field.

The important rule, and it is genuinely surprising: armour plates and helmets no longer break when their durability hits zero. Instead they take a permanent reduction to their maximum durability — even if you repair them afterwards — and get marked as broken while still providing a small amount of protection.

That means a plate is not a consumable, it is a degrading asset. Feeding your best plate into every raid is a long-term cost, not a free swap.

Plate durability loss is permanent

Repairing a broken plate restores function, not maximum durability. If you have one Titan plate, treat it as a raid you leave the shelter for, not a raid you take everywhere.

The Replicator and the Refiner: two machines, two jobs

Both machines were moved into the Workshop by update 0.4.0.62 on 4 September 2026, so both are now in one place rather than scattered.

The division of labour is straightforward once you know it:

  • The Refiner breaks down the goods you bring back into usable materials and credits. You feed it loot and chronotraces come out.
  • The Replicator spends those materials and chronotraces to build items from blueprints you have unlocked. The Fire Walk update moved some recipes from the Replicator to the Refiner as synthesis recipes.

Chronotraces were split into six separate types during the 250 Shades of Liberty update. The stated reason was to make resource logic clearer and more intuitive, so you are not memorising bizarre recipes and wondering why fusing a rifle requires a camera and two pounds of raw hazelnuts from a church basement.

Queue capacity is gated by edition, and the gating is real: the Advanced Edition carries the first replicator queue expansion and the Deluxe Edition carries a second.

One more constraint worth knowing before you spend: edition bonuses for storage and replicator expansions no longer stack with purchases made using in-game currency — they only accelerate progression. After a self-sacrifice they remain in effect. And the sequential purchase requirement is enforced, so the second expansion requires the first.

What the community says about crafting

The most common complaint on r/ActiveMatter is that the crafting systems are needlessly complex. That complaint has a specific answer from the community rather than the developers, and it is worth knowing even though it is unverified:

Community find: fusion is an instant craft and costs fewer components and chronotraces, while replication is free if the blueprint still has charges but takes time.

Treat that as a community reading of the current system that may change in a future patch. Nothing in the official patch notes states a fusion-versus-replication cost comparison.

What the 0.4.0.156 patch changed about handling

Two weapon-handling changes in the 26 September 2026 patch affect loadout decisions directly:

  • Reduced shotgun sway when hip-firing and while aiming.
  • Reduced the aim-punch you suffer when hit by a Flowerman.

If you dismissed shotguns at launch because of the sway, that reasoning expired with this patch. The same build also fixed the TOZ-B failing to reload in Open Raids, and fixed the Tactical Beacon so items are actually present in the inventory when it activates.

A concrete starter setup

Everything here comes from the published Standard Edition contents or from the patch notes. Where community advice is included, it is labelled.

Primary: SOK-94 Vepr Carbine. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, which is the ammunition you start with the most of at 360 rounds per box. It is the cheapest sensible answer to mid-range engagements.

Secondary: MB590 shotgun. 12 Gauge, 240 rounds per box, and its handling improved on 26 September 2026. Shotguns are the right answer to anomalies that are already closing on you.

Sidearm: M9 pistol. 9x19mm, 900 rounds in a box. Carried, not planned around.

Everything else: Small Backpack, Small Pouch, Small Magazine Pouches, Tactical PASGT Helmet, Steel plates in S and L, a Small safe container for the one item you refuse to lose, and a Beacon if you play contested raids.

Community loadout builds, flagged

A recurring r/ActiveMatter recommendation is an M4A1 with four magazines and roughly 120 loose armour, paired with a shotgun carrying around 90 rounds of loose ammunition, a spear, two AI-2 kits, some grenades and a large rig. Another thread recommends spending early chronotraces on ceramic plates in S and L, with a big backpack treated as optional. Both are community finds, not developer guidance, and both predate the 0.4.0.156 handling changes. Verify them against your current build before copying them.

One more piece of community advice worth repeating because it has been circulating for months without official confirmation: start in PvE and use a shotgun as a secondary, but avoid the TOZ because it only holds two rounds. Note that the patch notes refer to a TOZ-B rather than a TOZ, so the two-round claim may refer to a different weapon or an older build. The shotgun advice holds regardless.

FAQ

What is the best starter weapon in Active Matter? The SOK-94 Vepr Carbine and the MB590 shotgun, because the Standard Edition ships 360 rounds of 7.62x39mm and 240 of 12 Gauge. There is no 5.56mm ammunition in the Standard Edition, so the widely recommended M4A1 is not a starter option.

How do I make more room in my inventory? Pouches and backpacks are different systems — the backpack is general-purpose, pouches are specialised. Beyond that, upgrade your carrying capacity or learn what to leave behind; volumes were rebalanced on 27 August 2026 so pre-update numbers are unreliable.

Should I repair a broken armour plate? Yes, it will function again, but the permanent loss to its maximum durability does not come back. Plates and helmets no longer break outright at zero durability — they take a permanent reduction and are marked broken.

What is the difference between the Replicator and the Refiner? The Refiner breaks looted items down into materials and credits. The Replicator spends materials and chronotraces to build items from unlocked blueprints. Both were moved into the Workshop on 4 September 2026.

Is there a way to spend less time crafting? Fusion is reported by players to be an instant craft costing fewer components and chronotraces than replication, which is free but slow while blueprint charges last. That is a community finding, not a published developer statement.
