How to play Active Matter as a PvE-focused player: which raid types keep other operatives out, what is unavoidably contested, and where to start.
Active Matter PvE Guide: Playing Solo Without Getting PvP Griefed
The complaint that comes up most on r/ActiveMatter is not that Active Matter is too hard. It is that players who came for the PvE loop keep ending up in fights with other players they never wanted to meet. That complaint is fair, and the answer is more nuanced than the usual advice to just play PvE mode.
Active Matter has a real, supported PvE layer. It is not a cut-down version of the game. But some zones are permanently PvPvE by design, and no queue setting will change that.

What you are actually choosing between
The raid selection menu offers four raid types: PvP, Solo, Co-op and Nexus Battles. That menu, plus the distinction the developers draw between Open Raids and Isolated Raids, is the entire PvE control surface.
| Raid type | Other player squads? | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Solo matchmaking — you meet other lone players, not squads | Learning maps and anomalies at your own pace |
| Co-op Isolated | No other player squads | Running PvE content with one or two friends |
| Open Raid (PvPvE) | Yes | Progression you cannot get elsewhere |
| Nexus Battles | PvP only | Not a PvE option |
The community consensus on Nexus Battles is that it is the Counter-Strike-alike PvP mode, and that it has no PvE content at all. That reading is consistent with the official description of dedicated PvP battles, but the developers have never published a formal mode-by-mode PvE/PvP table — treat the middle two rows as the reliable part and verify the rest in-game.
Solo matchmaking puts you against other lone players rather than organised squads, which makes it the gentlest on-ramp. Co-op Isolated is where you actually remove PvP from the equation entirely. The first raid guide walks through a first run using this route.
The honest part: some zones cannot be PvE
The developers were asked directly whether entire maps being locked to Open Raids only would turn away players who might otherwise be interested. The answer was that some raid designs simply are not well-suited to certain modes. They plan to expand the areas available for exploration, but stated plainly that this will not include making Unstable Zone modes playable in Isolated Raids.
That is the sentence to internalise. There is a category of content in this game that you will only ever meet with other players in, and the studio has said it is staying that way. If you are playing for the anomaly loop specifically, check which zones are Unstable Zone modes before you plan a farm route around them. The maps and locations guide covers the zone list.
The rest of the map is not locked, and the rotation is the trade you are making. When players asked why Open Raid maps rotate instead of all staying available, the developers answered that all existing Isolated Raids, including their variants, can be played anytime, while Open Raids are tuned to balance short matchmaking times against a player pool large enough to fill them. Offering too many raids at once would either lengthen queues or dilute the player pool.

An old restriction you will still find quoted
If you search for Active Matter PvE limits you will find advice from early access saying the Standard Edition came with a limited number of isolated raid passes, after which PvE dropped to once every 24 hours. That rule is gone.
The Fire Walk update on 18 December 2025 removed tickets entirely, converted any remaining tickets into Crystallised Active Matter at a 1:25 ratio, and moved isolated raid access to being edition-dependent. Community moderators on r/ActiveMatter now state that there are no restrictions on the number of Isolated or co-op Isolated Raids you can play per day.
Any guide describing isolated raid passes, ticket limits or a 24-hour PvE cooldown describes the early access build. It has not been accurate since 18 December 2025.
Where other players still show up inside a PvE raid
Even when you are not in PvPvE, the game has systems designed to pull you toward interaction with rival operatives. Being aware of them is the difference between a PvE night and a frustrating one.
The SOS signal. When you die you can call an SOS. Players have found it controversial, arguing it disrupts the flow of battle and reveals your position. The developers have said the design goal was to encourage more player interaction, and have already adjusted it so it no longer reveals the exact position of the deceased. It is a designed feature, not a bug, and it is the main reason a PvE raid can still turn into a rescue scenario.
The Beacon. Your respawn item occupies its own inventory slot and activates automatically on death. Since update 0.4.0.73 its activation audio plays from your body, warning a killer that someone may come looking. If you are avoiding PvP entirely, that is a reason to weigh whether you carry one.
Player footstep audio. Players report that Turned Soldiers sometimes spawn with no audible steps, and that it is hard to hear other players even when they are close. The developers have acknowledged this and said they are continually working on footstep audibility and directional cues. Until that improves, audio is not a reliable PvE safety net.

What is on the developers' side of the argument
It is fair to say PvE players get written off, and it is also fair to say the studio has kept improving the PvE layer. Concrete examples from the launch period:
- Anomaly yields were raised sharply on 26 September 2026 — three to four times for Shy Girls and roughly ten times for Alpha Mimics and Alpha Flowermen. See the anomalies guide for what that means for which anomalies to farm.
Official source: Update 0.4.0.156 (26 September 2026)
- Distorted threat locations were made deliberately more dangerous on 21 September 2026, which is a PvE difficulty decision that had nothing to do with PvP balance.
- Raid and game modes were expanded in the 250 Shades of Liberty update on 27 August 2026, adding Downtown, Downtown: Unstable Zone, Downtown: Collapse and the Airport raid, with the Missions Terminal UI rebuilt around a full-size map and clear labelling of Isolated Raids.
- Crossplay at launch runs three separate queues — your platform only, consoles only, or any platform — each requiring an explicit selection in settings from every player. If you are playing with a friend on a different platform, you both need to pick the same queue.
The community argument that PvE players are not out-gearing PvP players, because someone farming in PvE and bringing their gains into PvP was always how it worked, is worth taking seriously. It is a forum position rather than a developer statement, but it matches how the extraction loop is actually structured: risk and reward are supposed to balance across modes, not be zeroed in one.
A practical PvE routine
- Pick Co-op Isolated when you want zero player squads. Pick Solo when you want to be alone but still in a live raid population.
- Confirm the zone is not an Unstable Zone mode before you commit a route to it.
- Read the primary contract at the terminal. It never blocks extraction, so a bad contract will not trap you.
- Carry a Beacon if you play in Open Raids, and accept the audio trade that comes with it.
- Watch the five-minute and one-minute zone collapse warnings. They are the same in PvE and they are your exit clock.
- Test your kit before a contested run — the loadout guide covers the starter setup, and the Shelter shooting range is free of other players entirely.
FAQ
Is Active Matter playable as a pure PvE game? Mostly. Solo and Co-op Isolated raids exist and Isolated Raids and their variants are always available, but the developers have said some zones will remain locked to Open Raids only and that Unstable Zone modes will not become playable in Isolated Raids.
Are there limits on how many Isolated Raids I can play per day? Current community guidance on r/ActiveMatter says there is no daily limit on Isolated or co-op Isolated raids. The old ticket and pass system was removed on 18 December 2025.
What is Nexus Battles? It is the dedicated PvP mode — community descriptions call it the Counter-Strike-alike content. It contains no PvE and is not relevant to a PvE-focused player.
Why does a PvE raid still involve other players? Several systems are designed to encourage interaction, most notably the SOS signal you can call when you die. The developers have confirmed the goal was player interaction and have already changed it so it no longer reveals your exact position.
Can I play with friends on another platform? Yes. Crossplay runs three separate queues — platform only, consoles only, or any platform — and each player must explicitly select or confirm their queue in settings.
Is PvE progression slower than PvP progression? The developers have not published a formal comparison, and the current answer is version-dependent because PvE and Open raid balance changes land every few days. Check the current patch notes before drawing conclusions.
