Active Matter Anomalies Guide: Monsters, Alphas and Weak Spots
The single biggest change to anomaly farming in Active Matter landed on 26 September 2026. Update 0.4.0.156 multiplied Active Matter yields from Shy Girls by three to four, and from Alpha Mimics and Alpha Flowermen by roughly ten. If you were ignoring the alpha bosses because they were not worth the risk three days ago, that calculation is stale.
Anomalies are also the reason most raids end badly. A zone will kill you faster than a player will if you walk into a building without knowing what lives there. This guide breaks the roster down by what each thing does, what the developers have officially said about it, and what is still undocumented.

What the developers have actually documented
Being straight about this first, because it shapes the whole page: Matter Team has published official descriptions for only a handful of anomalies. There is no official bestiary with health pools, damage values or weak-spot locations. Anything you read elsewhere claiming exact numbers for a Distorted's hit points is community testing, not developer data, and it will drift with patches.
What is officially documented, in order of usefulness:
Alpha Flowerman — the most detailed official write-up in the game, published 13 March 2026. The Agency describes them as a previously unknown class of anomalous organism, a new evolutionary form of the Flowerman actively spreading across Dalniy Island. They are significantly larger than other specimens, and their bulk makes them slower. Critically for farming: they are typically surrounded by large numbers of ordinary Flowermen, they form large nests, and the Agency has observed huge concentrations of Active Matter within those nests.

Shy Girl, Scorch and Mimic Car — added as new monsters in the Fire Walk update on 18 December 2025, alongside two new environmental anomalies, Fireball and Fire. The same patch made Mimics able to transform into mimic objects, and stopped Mimics from stacking inside objects or standing completely still.

Devourers — the 0.4.0.137 patch on 23 September 2026 restored the proper distribution of information about Devourers, which implies the information was broken before that. If you played in the launch window and found Devourer data missing or wrong, that was a bug, not your mistake.
Turned Soldiers — introduced through the Downtown raid in the 250 Shades of Liberty update: former law enforcement, police and SWAT, continuing their patrols under distorted protocols. They are armed, they patrol in groups, and they are closer to human opponents than to monsters. Voice lines for Turned Soldiers were added in the Fire Walk patch.

The roster by threat type
| Threat | What it does | Detection cue | Best answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distorted | Short-range melee, swarms once detected | Loud, close, relentless | Distance and a shotgun; do not let it close |
| Invisibles | Ambush enemy that catches you off guard | Absence — the cue is what stops happening | Discipline; they punish tunnel vision |
| Flowermen | Rushes you, hits your aim | Audible rush; visible at close range | Break line of sight, punish the recovery |
| Alpha Flowerman | Slow, large, nests full of Active Matter | Visible bulk, nest density, Flowermen escort | Bring the add-clear, then take the alpha |
| Devourers | Officially documented as of 0.4.0.137 | Re-check in-game, data was previously broken | Unknown publicly — verify before committing gear |
| Alpha Mimic | Mimic objects that used to stand still and stack | Objects that behave wrong | Stop shooting furniture you have not cleared |
| Shy Girl | Yield source, buffed 3-4x in 0.4.0.156 | Undocumented publicly | Farm it — the numbers just changed |
| Turned Soldiers | Armed human-shaped patrols | Footsteps, gunfire, sightlines | Treat as PvP with worse audio |
The Distorted, Invisible and Devourer rows are where community testing leads and official data does not. Community wiki documentation describes Distorted as the basic short-range melee enemy that swarms you once detected, and Invisibles as an ambush-style enemy designed to catch you off guard. Both descriptions match how players play, but neither is a developer statement — treat them as a reliable community read rather than a spec.
The Flowerman problem, and the patch that eased it
Flowermen were one of the most complained-about anomalies in the launch window because of what they do to your ability to shoot back. Update 0.4.0.156 reduced the aim-punch you suffer when hit by a Flowerman, and the same patch reduced shotgun sway when hip-firing and while aiming.
That is a meaningful quality-of-life change for anyone running a shotgun build. If you read a guide from launch week warning you off shotguns because of sway, that advice is out of date as of 26 September 2026.
Two separate handling penalties were reduced in the same patch. The loadout guide covers how shotguns fit into a starter kit, but the sway numbers behind that advice changed three days ago.
Distorted locations got more dangerous on purpose
Update 0.4.0.132, released 21 September 2026, intensified danger in Distorted threat locations. This was a deliberate difficulty increase, not a bug, and it landed alongside major control improvements in the same patch.
If you learned a building in early September and it got harder, that is the reason. If you are planning a farming route through a Distorted-heavy zone, build that route around the current density, not the one you remember.
Where the yield buff changes your priorities
The 0.4.0.156 numbers, stated exactly as the patch states them:
- Shy Girl Active Matter yield: three to four times previous.
- Alpha Mimic Active Matter yield: approximately ten times previous.
- Alpha Flowerman Active Matter yield: approximately ten times previous.
Combined with the official Alpha Flowerman note that nests contain huge concentrations of Active Matter, the arithmetic points somewhere obvious: a nest is now worth the risk it always was, rather than the optional detour it was a week ago. Alpha Mimic went from a curiosity to a target for the same reason.
These multipliers are accurate as of build 0.4.0.156 on 26 September 2026. Balance passes land roughly every two to three days in the launch period, so confirm against the current patch notes before planning a farm around them. The currency guide tracks what each resource is worth.
What nobody has documented, and how to close the gap yourself
There is no published data on anomaly health pools, exact damage values, or weak-spot locations. Rather than fill that gap with guesses, close it in-game:
- The Shelter has a shooting range. Use it to compare weapons before you commit ammunition to a real fight.
- Weapons carry a zeroing distance that can be inspected, so a shot that seems to do nothing may be a zeroing problem rather than a weak-spot problem.
- Effective hits are marked with a distinct hitmark in-game, added back in the Fire Walk patch. If you are not seeing it, you are missing.
Community frame data, damage calculators and bestiary spreadsheets for this game are unverified outside their authors. Patch numbers change without notice and the alpha changes in 0.4.0.156 are exactly the kind of shift that invalidates a spreadsheet. Flag them as community findings that may break in future patches, and re-verify anything you rely on.
Putting it together: how to fight a nest
An Alpha Flowerman encounter is three problems stacked — the boss, the Flowermen escorting it, and the nest geometry you have to move through. Work them in that order:
- Clear or isolate the escort before the alpha is engaged. The official note that they are typically surrounded by large numbers of ordinary Flowermen is a warning about aggro, not flavour text.
- Use the alpha's own weakness. The official brief says their bulk makes them slower. Slow is a range problem — it gives you time.
- Extract on the same terms as any other raid. The extraction loop guide covers the collapse clock that decides whether the ten-times yield ever reaches your storage.
FAQ
What changed about anomalies in the 0.4.0.156 patch? Active Matter yields went up three to four times for Shy Girls and roughly ten times for Alpha Mimics and Alpha Flowermen. The same patch reduced the aim-punch you take when hit by a Flowerman and reduced shotgun sway when hip-firing and aiming.
Are Alpha Mimics or Alpha Flowermen worth farming now? Both are, as of 26 September 2026. Their yields went up by roughly ten times in one patch, and the Agency has documented large Active Matter concentrations inside Alpha Flowerman nests.
Are there weak spots on anomalies? The developers have not published weak-spot locations. Effective hits register with a distinct hitmark in-game, and the Shelter shooting range lets you test a weapon before committing to a real encounter.
Why is there no official Devourer information? There is now. Update 0.4.0.137 on 23 September 2026 fixed the distribution of Devourer information, so any source describing Devourers that you read before that date may reflect broken data.
Did the Distorted get harder? Yes. Update 0.4.0.132 on 21 September 2026 deliberately intensified danger in Distorted threat locations.
Can Turned Soldiers be avoided? They are armed patrol units rather than anomalies — former police and SWAT patrolling under distorted protocols in the Downtown raid. Their footsteps are not always audible, which the developers have acknowledged and said they are working on.
