Active Matter Extraction Loop - Zones and Exit Rules

How an Active Matter raid runs: take a contract, harvest Active Matter, then extract before the zone collapses and takes your gear with it.

Active Matter Extraction Loop: Zones, Timelines and Getting Out

Most people who lose their gear in Active Matter did not make one bad decision. They made a series of reasonable ones and then ran out of clock. The raid is a timer with a loot pile inside it, and every mechanic in the game exists to make you choose between the pile and the door.

The whole loop is short: queue a raid from the Missions Terminal, take an objective contract, harvest Active Matter and gear, then reach the extraction portal before the quantum-unstable zone collapses. The developers stated it as plainly as they ever do: the objective remains unchanged — loot, intel, extraction.

Here is what that loop is actually made of, and which parts of it change when a patch lands.

The five stages, and what each one costs you

Stage What you are doing What goes wrong here
Deploy Pick raid, raid type and loadout at the Missions Terminal Loading in with premium gear and a cheap plan
Contract Accept a primary objective and its tasks Wandering before you have read the objective
Harvest Loot containers, harvest Active Matter, fight anomalies Filling every slot and leaving no room to extract
Extract Reach the portal, survive the extraction window Treating the portal as a formality you walk through
Return Sell, refine, replicate, upgrade Spending the wrong resource on the wrong upgrade

Two of those stages punish you hardest, and neither is the one new players expect. Stage four is where most gear dies, and stage five is where most players quietly waste their earnings.

Contracts: the one primary objective that cannot block you

There is exactly one primary contract in a raid. It does not block extraction, it always retains its rewards, and it does not hand out Monolith Tokens. Every other contract is daily, except key contracts.

That rule matters more than it sounds. A primary contract can never trap you in a zone you want to leave — if extraction and the contract pull in opposite directions, the game lets you walk. Contracts that are extraction-mandatory get pinned to the top of your task list so you cannot miss them.

Contract types you will actually meet include Specimen Capture, where a trap is placed and marked on the map until it is picked up or used, and Vehicle Transfer, where a vehicle has to be driven somewhere. Update 0.4.0.156 added a quality-of-life fix here: monster-capture contract progress is now preserved when a captured monster is extracted via a safe container or a robot dog, so you can no longer lose a live capture to a technicality.

The zone collapse clock, and the two warnings you get

Anomalous zones collapse. Since update 0.4.0.73 (9 September 2026) the game gives you an on-screen notification five minutes before a zone begins to collapse and again one minute before it does.

That is the single most useful mechanic in the loop for a new player, and it arrived five days after a major content update landed. Two hard numbers to anchor on, both from the same patch:

  • The Downtown raid duration was increased from 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Collapse warnings fire at five minutes and one minute remaining.

Read the warning as a departure alarm, not a countdown to fight through. If you are twenty minutes in with a full backpack and no contract progress, the five-minute warning is when you should already be walking to an exit, not when you should start looking for one.

The five-minute warning is a floor, not a promise

The warning tells you when the zone will close. It does not tell you how long your route back to the portal takes, and it does not account for the fact that another squad may already be camping that portal. Plan the walk out before you take the last container.

Open Raid versus Isolated Raid: the tradeoff the developers defended

This is the part players argue about most, so it is worth quoting the developers directly rather than paraphrasing.

When asked why the team returned to rotating Open Raid maps instead of keeping every map available at once, the answer was that all existing Isolated Raids, including their variants, can be played anytime. For Open Raids, the studio is aiming to balance short matchmaking times with enough players for a good experience — offering too many raids at once would either lengthen queues or dilute the player pool.

That is the whole tradeoff in two sentences. Isolated Raids are always available and always solo-only in terms of other player squads. Open Raids rotate, which means the map you want to farm for progression may simply not be up today. If you are still building a base loadout, that is a real cost, and the loadout guide covers how to farm around it. If you are still learning the loop, take the rotation as a gift — you will never wait on a map.

Not everything rotates, though. Some map areas are locked to Open Raids only, and the developers were explicit that expanding explorable areas will not include making Unstable Zone modes playable in Isolated Raids. Those zones are permanently contested. The PvE guide covers which ones they are and what to do about it.

What happens when you die, and what you keep

Dying costs you the weapons and equipment that are neither inside a safe container nor classed as personal equipment. That single sentence is the entire risk model of the game, and it is why safe containers exist.

Two items change the maths:

The Beacon. It sits in its own inventory slot, no longer has to be placed on the ground, and activates automatically on death. Since 0.4.0.73 its activation audio plays from your body, which warns the killer that someone may come looking for revenge. That is a deliberate trade: you get a second life, and you also announce it.

The robot dog. As of 0.4.0.156 you can cancel its extraction command, and contract progress tied to a captured monster now survives an extraction carried out by the dog. A dog sent to the portal with your good rifle is a real option, but you can no longer panic-recall it mid-run.

Your gear is not the only casualty. Implanted tier 3 chronogenes now lose a tier after an unsuccessful raid.

Decide what is worth dying over before you deploy

Pick one item in your kit that you refuse to lose, put it in a safe container, and treat everything else as disposable currency. Players who lose everything usually lose it because they brought nothing they were willing to lose.

Personal Timelines: the loop outside the raid

Raid loot is not the only thing at stake. Creating a new Personal Timeline collapses the old one, and as of update 0.4.0.156 (26 September 2026) the Agency revised the protocols for that collapse: when you create a new Timeline, some of an Operative's property can now be preserved.

This is the reset layer sitting under the whole extraction loop, and it is the part that makes long-term planning matter. The Monolith and Harmonization Cycle guide covers the progression track that a Timeline roll feeds.

Practical rules for getting out with your gear

  • Check the deployment window before you confirm. Since 250 Shades of Liberty the raid screen warns you if you do not have enough ammunition equipped for the raid you selected.
  • Read the primary contract at the terminal, not on the move. Extraction-mandatory contracts sit at the top of the list for a reason.
  • Leave one slot free. The anomalies guide covers why you will often have to drop something mid-run.
  • Treat the five-minute collapse warning as your cue to route home, even mid-contract.
  • After a failed raid you can requeue the same raid location and type from the debrief menu — but it is a new session, not a rewind.

FAQ

How long do I have in an Active Matter raid? It depends on the zone. Downtown runs 45 minutes as of update 0.4.0.73 on 9 September 2026, up from 30. Other raids have their own durations, and map data changes with patches — check the maps and locations guide for the current set.

Do I lose everything when I die? No. You lose weapons and equipment that are neither inside a safe container nor classed as personal equipment. Anything in a safe container stays with the container.

Can I complete a raid without finishing the primary contract? Yes. The primary contract does not block extraction, and it always retains its rewards. It simply does not award Monolith Tokens.

Why is the map I want not available? Open Raids rotate. The developers keep Isolated Raids always available but rotate Open Raids to balance short queue times against a player pool that is not large enough to fill every map at once.

Is there still a difference between Open and Isolated raids after 0.4.0.156? Yes. Isolated Raids and their variants remain playable at any time, and some map areas stay locked to Open Raids only. The team said explicitly that Unstable Zone modes will not become available in Isolated Raids.

Does dying cost progression? Implanted tier 3 chronogenes lose a tier after an unsuccessful raid. Weights, weapons and equipment are governed by the safe-container and personal-equipment rules instead.
