Active Matter Crossplay - PC, PS5 and Xbox Matchmaking

Active Matter crossplay runs as three separate matchmaking queues you pick in settings. Cross-progression is different: here is what carries over.

Active Matter Crossplay: How PC, PS5 and Xbox Matchmaking Works

Active Matter crossplay is on at launch, but it is not one big pool. It is three separate matchmaking queues that every player selects explicitly in settings: your platform only, consoles only (Xbox plus PlayStation), or any platform (PC plus consoles). Separately, and this is the part that gets conflated constantly, your progress does not carry between PC and console. Shared progression exists only between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC.

The developers said it directly

Official source: Developer Q&A, September 7, 2026 - "Yes. Cross-platform play will be available at launch with three options: your platform only, consoles only (Xbox + PlayStation), or any platform (PC + consoles). These are separate matchmaking queues and require an explicit selection (or confirmation) in settings from each player."

The same answer appears in the official FAQ, in slightly different words: "Yes, we have cross-platform multiplayer. On consoles, you can choose where to search for players for matches: only your platform, consoles only, or any platform."

The reason this design exists is fairness of input. On the r/ActiveMatter thread asking whether console players can be matched against PC keyboard-and-mouse players, the opening question is whether console players can opt out, with the complaint that it "seems crazy unfair for the console playerbase if so." They can. The queue choice is the opt-out.

Queue Who you can meet When to pick it
Your platform only Only players on your exact platform You want the most even matchup
Consoles only Xbox and PlayStation players You play on console and want controller-only matchmaking
Any platform PC and consoles You want the biggest pool and fast queues

Both sides of a match have to agree. If you sit in any platform and your friend sits in consoles only, you will not meet. Pick the same queue before you queue, and change it in settings rather than assuming the game resolves it for you.

What the answer did not settle

The Q&A question asked about crossplay and aim assist together. The developers answered the queue question and did not address aim assist, so there is no official statement here about whether console aim assist is active when you are matched into a mixed queue. If that matters to you, test it in the queue you intend to use rather than trusting an assumption.

The same thread raised a related point that has an official answer. When asked whether programs like ReShade are allowed, the response was that it "is possible that they may be interpreted by the anti-cheat as attempts to interfere with the game." Read that as a warning before you install any overlay that injects into the game.

Cross-progression: what actually carries over

This is where the official answers contradict each other on the surface, so here is both halves.

The specific FAQ entry is unambiguous:

Can I transfer my progress between the PC and console versions of Active Matter? No. Shared progress is available only between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC.

Official source: Active Matter FAQ, last updated 15.09.2026.

That is the authoritative answer. Console progress does not move to PC, and PC progress does not move to console.

You will also see a line in the purchase modal on the official site reading that your game progress is shared across all platforms. Read it as marketing copy about the crossplay queues, not as a progression promise. The FAQ entry is the specific, technical statement, and it is the one the developers wrote to answer this exact question.

Progress type Steam to Gaijin.Net PC PC to PS5 PC to Xbox
Characters, stash, Monolith progress Yes, via account linking No No
Matchmaking Yes, same PC pool Yes, via crossplay queue Yes, via crossplay queue
Achievements Separate per platform (38 on Steam, Xbox achievements listed) Not transferred Not transferred

The one deadline that matters on PC

If you played the early version through the Gaijin Store, cross-progression on PC works through account linking, and the deadline is firm. Those players get free access to the Steam edition, but they must link their accounts by November 23, 2026. After linking, progress transfers to Steam and you can keep playing on PC through either launcher with shared progress.

That conversion route is PC-to-PC. It does nothing for a console save.

Decide your platform before you grind. Progress in this game is built on Monolith access levels and a Replicator arsenal, and none of that follows you to a different device family. If you plan to switch from PC to console later, you are starting over, not continuing.

Xbox specifics

The Xbox store page is the most explicit platform listing about cross-platform play. All of the following is from the Xbox storefront:

  • Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and Xbox cross-platform co-op are both listed as capabilities.
  • Online multiplayer is listed as 2 to 16 players, co-op as 2 to 3.
  • Xbox cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere are listed. Play Anywhere covers the Xbox console and the Microsoft Store Windows build, not Steam.
  • The game is marked Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, with 4K Ultra HD, HDR10 and 60 fps+ listed.

The PlayStation Store listing could not be read directly during verification because it served a region-blocked page, so PS5-side matchmaking details here come from the official site and Q&A rather than from the store page.

Setting up crossplay without wasting an evening

  1. Pick the queue before your first queue attempt, not after a friend fails to show up. The selection is explicit and confirmed in settings by each player.
  2. Tell your group the exact queue name. Consoles only and any platform sound identical in conversation and behave completely differently at match time.
  3. If a queue feels empty, you are probably in your-platform-only. That setting is the right answer for fairness and the wrong answer for queue speed.
  4. Check the raid as well as the platform. Some locations are exclusive to PvPvE, some to PvP and some to PvE, so a correct queue can still land you in a raid you cannot play.
  5. Expect the queue to change over time. Open Raids rotate to keep matchmaking short and the player pool undiluted, so the raid you queued for may not be the one that runs.

Two smaller launch facts from the same Q&A are worth knowing. Achievements arrive on Steam and consoles at launch, are described as not too difficult, tie into the core mechanics and include a few secret ones. On localisation, the team said it is expanding official languages while also exploring unofficial community translation for languages it cannot support officially yet. The game currently ships in English, German, French, Russian, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese.

FAQ

Is Active Matter crossplay?

Yes, at launch. There are three queues: your platform only, consoles only, or any platform.

Do I have to enable crossplay?

Yes. The developers state that each queue "require[s] an explicit selection (or confirmation) in settings from each player." It is not on by default.

Can console players opt out of playing against PC?

Yes, by choosing your platform only or consoles only. That opt-out is the main reason the queues are separate.

Can I transfer my progress from PC to PS5 or Xbox?

No. The official FAQ states shared progress is available only between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC.

Do console and PC players play in the same raids?

Yes, if you both select the any platform queue. Xbox additionally lists its own cross-platform multiplayer and co-op as platform capabilities.

Can I move my early Gaijin Store save to Steam?

Yes, by linking accounts by November 23, 2026. That conversion is PC to PC.
